Summer Campaign:
Safer Communities

Introduction

This summer the party will be running a campaign on safer communities, highlighting Conservative failure on crime and setting out Labour’s alternative.

The key focus of the campaign is on antisocial behaviour.

This toolkit includes everything campaigners need to set up and run a great summer campaign in communities across the country and will be updated to include additional resources in the coming weeks.

The aim of the campaign is to:

  • Engage with local residents about antisocial behaviour issues in the community
  • Talk about how the Conservatives cut police to the lowest level in a generation, cut preventative services, and victims seeking justice are being forced to wait years
  • Deliver our message that a Labour government will drive down crime and antisocial behaviour, tackle its root causes and ensure criminals are brought to justice
  • Encourage as many people as possible to get involved in local campaigns and their local Labour Party

This toolkit is organised into sections to help campaigners organise an effective local campaign:

UK Labour (England only)

The Conservatives cut our police to the lowest level in a generation and cut funding for services that prevent crime from happening.

These decisions helped cause a surge in antisocial behaviour, leaving people afraid in their own communities. Drug use has risen and criminal gangs are exploiting kids to send drugs around the country. And there is huge concern about violent crime.

It shouldn’t be like this – and it doesn’t have to be.

Labour would make your streets safer. Our priorities are to drive down crime and antisocial behaviour, tackle the root causes of the problems that communities face and ensure criminals are brought to justice.

We’d put more police on the beat in our communities and we’d ensure provision of youth clubs and treatment services. We’ll put victims of crime first, starting by strengthening their rights in law.

It says a lot about Boris Johnson’s priorities that he’s currently planning to waste hundreds of millions of pounds on a flashy new national yacht to promote the Tory government overseas. It is a vanity project that won’t do anything to address people’s everyday concerns.

Labour would make different choices. We would scrap the government’s flashy new yacht and spend the money on fighting crime in our communities.

Before becoming leader of the Labour Party, Keir Starmer was the most senior prosecutor in the country. It was his job to get criminals off the streets and give victims the justice they deserve. That’s the job of the Prime Minister, too, and Keir Starmer will act where Boris Johnson has failed.

Welsh Labour (Wales only)

The Conservatives in Westminster have cut our police to the lowest level in a generation and cut funding for services that prevent crime from happening.

A UK Labour government working with the Welsh Labour Government would make your streets safer. Our priorities are to drive down crime and antisocial behaviour, tackle the root causes of the problems that communities face and ensure criminals are brought to justice.

We’d put more police on the beat in our communities: our Welsh Labour Government has already funded 500 Police Community Support Officers and plans to increase this to 600.

Labour would scrap the yacht and spend the money on tackling crime in our communities.

Antisocial behaviour is spiralling out of control thanks to the Tories and communities like yours are paying the price. It shouldn’t be this way.
