500,000 patients are being let down by this Government’s sustained underfunding – Jonathan Ashworth
Jonathan Ashworth MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, responding to the news that over 500,000 patients are now waiting over 18 weeks for hospital treatment, said:
“On the cusp of the 70th birthday of our NHS, these record waiting lists are an absolute indictment of Theresa May’s failure to put patients first.
“In just one year, the number of patients forced to wait over 18 weeks for important treatments, such as hip and knee replacements, has increased by almost 120,000.
“Patients are being let down by this Government’s sustained underfunding, relentless bed cuts and total failure to invest in community care and adequate social care to ensure prompt discharges.
“This is why we urgently need a fully funded long-term plan for the NHS and social care.”
