Aid should address poverty, not promote big business
Kate Osamor MP, Labour’s Shadow International Development Secretary, commenting on today’s report by the International Development Committee on the definition and administration of overseas Development assistance, said:
“The Government has been attempting to repurpose, reallocate and redefine aid, diverting money designated for the world’s poorest people to plug the budget gaps in other departments created by eight years of Tory austerity.
“Aid is there to address the injustice of poverty, not further the interests of national security or big business.
“The next Labour government will build a world for the many not the few. We will charge the Department for International Development not only with working to eradicate poverty, but also, for the first time, with reducing global inequality.”
