Angela Rayner comments on the Social Mobility Commission
Angela Rayner MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, commenting on Ministers’ answers to her parliamentary questions on the Social Mobility Commission, said:
“So much for the Prime Minister’s promises to tackle the ‘burning injustices’. The admission that it will take over six months to replace the Social Mobility Commissioners, who walked out in despair at her Government’s failures, tells us everything we need to know about the Tories’ real priorities.
“Given Education Ministers’ record on public appointments, it is hard to have much faith in this process. They were caught red-handed breaking the Ministerial Code to install Toby Young on the board of the Office for Students, yet the Prime Minister has turned a blind eye.
“Now they are dragging their feet in replacing an independent-minded Social Mobility Commission, it is hard to escape the suspicion that they are desperate to avoid being held to account on their own promises. With even a Tory-led select committee demanding a Commission ‘with teeth’, I warn them now that another Government crony simply will not command confidence or respect.”
