Angela Rayner responds to IFS on education spending
Commenting, Angela Rayner MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Education, said:
“Each of the contenders for the Conservative leadership backed Budgets that cut funding for our schools. As school funding was cut for the first time in a generation they sat around the Cabinet or at their desks in government departments and did nothing to stop it.
“Parents and teachers will rightly be sceptical about hollow promises from Tory leadership candidates, especially when one of them, Michael Gove, was Education Secretary for four years and delivered huge cuts to further education.
“Far too many of them, including Boris Johnson, have made commitments to school funding that would not even reverse the damage of their own Party’s cuts to schools. Their plans would not end the scandal of schools begging for additional support from parents and charities.
“Only a Labour government will give our schools the resources they need, reversing Tory cuts and increasing per pupil funding in real terms as part of a National Education Service.”
