Anneliese Dodds comments on news that the Chancellor may increase business rates

Anneliese Dodds MP, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, commenting on news that the Chancellor may increase business rates, said:

“Labour has called for a root and branch review of business rates to make the system fairer and help bricks and mortar retailers compete with online tech giants for many years. But ramping up business rates for every premises valued over £51,000, without any thought to regional differences or any attempt at a broader review, isn’t the way to do it.

“The Tories are already bringing in big changes to permitted development of retail premises. Adding on a blanket tax rise for higher value businesses will push even more off our high streets.

“Many people working in shops and restaurants already feel like their jobs are hanging by a thread. Speculation about extra taxes at a time like this risks tipping them over the edge. It’s the wrong approach once again from this one-size-fits-all Chancellor.”
