Barbara Keeley responds to new CQC’s report: Sexual Safety on Mental Health
Barbara Keeley MP, Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Minister for Mental Health, commenting on the CQC’s report, Sexual Safety on Mental Health Wards, said:
“The shocking volume of sexual incidents on mental health wards reported today, and all the factors that cause them, are incredibly alarming.
“Staffing levels are unsafe, training is inadequate, and facilities are old and unsuitable – and all of this has contributed to these deeply concerning incidents. This is the result of woeful underinvestment in mental health services by the Conservatives, and it’s the most vulnerable people in our country who are being harmed as a consequence of Tory austerity.
“The next Labour government will invest more in mental health services and we’ll ring-fence funding for them. That’s the only way we can begin to address these issues and ensure that both people with severe mental health conditions and our staff on mental health wards are safer from such levels of sexual harm in the future.”
