Barbara Keeley responds to new research from Independent Age

Barbara Keeley MP, Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Minister for Social Care, commenting on new research from Independent Age, showing that quality of care homes got worse in 1 in 5 local authorities in the last year, said:

“The unacceptable regional variation in the quality of care homes, which sees too many older people getting poor care, is the direct result of the Tories’ devastating cuts to council budgets.

“£6.3 billion has been taken out of adult social care budgets since 2010, heaping pressure on hard-pressed care staff who are dealing with growing demand for care from older people with increasingly complex needs.

“It’s time the Tories followed Labour’s lead by pledging to invest £8 billion extra in social care across the Parliament, with £1 billion up front this year, to ease the care crisis.”
