Barry Gardiner responds to Department for International Trade announcement
Barry Gardiner MP, Shadow Secretary of State for International Trade, responding to today’s announcement that the Department for International Trade will be launching partnerships with private sector businesses to deliver on the department’s export growth responsibility said:
“Just yesterday we learned that the Department is to axe hundreds of export promotion jobs around the world, undermining its ability to support UK exporters with on the ground knowledge and expertise.
“These are people with the contacts, networks, cultural and language skills essential to helping British businesses overcome barriers to trade and identifying growth opportunities for exports.
“Tasking private sector businesses with similar duties instead will not ensure that new exporters are given the support and opportunities needed to grow and diversify our export base, and will allow the Department to avoid proper scrutiny of its performance in aiding British businesses access overseas markets.”
