Boris Johnson tries to take credit for prison announcement made two years ago – Burgon

Exposing claims from the Ministry of Justice that a new prison to be built on the grounds of HMP Full Sutton is “the first milestone in the Prime Minister’s pledge for 10,000 new prison places” as a re-announcement from two years ago, Richard Burgon MP, Labour’s shadow justice secretary, said:

“Boris Johnson has no mandate, no authority and no new ideas. You can’t trust him to solve the prisons crisis caused by years of austerity, as he is just resorting to recycling old announcements like this.

“The recent pledge to build 10,000 new prison places has also been announced time and time again over the past five years – and then repeatedly broken.
