Carer’s Allowance Report – Margaret Greenwood responds
Margaret Greenwood MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, responding to a report that DWP should reassess approach to Carer’s Allowance, said:
“This report sets out clearly just how badly the Government has failed carers. As a result thousands of carers are being put through the stress of repaying money, with many pushed into financial hardship.
“Carers are paying the price for a rigid system that is poorly explained and staff shortages that have allowed overpayments to build up.
“Carers make a major contribution to society. Juggling work, while looking after a friend or family member, can be incredibly demanding. Carers make a major contribution to society and they deserve better.”
Notes to editors
- The Work and Pensions Committee has released a report today (Friday 2nd August) calling on DWP to completely reassess its approach to Carer’s Allowance and consider writing off debts due to its own protracted administrative failures.
- The Committee reports that carers are being disproportionately heavily penalised for years of DWP administrative errors or their own honest mistakes.
