There are clear public health risks to allowing waste to be transported in this way – Ashworth
Jonathan Ashworth MP, Labour’s Shadow Health and Social Care Secretary, responding to the news that clinical waste from NHS hospitals has been transported and disposed of in ways which normally breach safety regulations, said:
“This is yet another extraordinary revelation, not least because the Minister of State for Health was asked in the Commons last week whether it was true that unqualified drivers were being used to transport clinical waste. The Minister ignored these crucial questions and either deliberately, or through incompetence, has failed in his responsibility towards transparency.
“There are clear public health risks to allowing waste to be transported in this way and the Government now needs to publish all advice it has received on the public health implications of allowing this waste to be moved and disposed of in this manner.”
