Debbie Abrahams comment on today’s ONS Labour Market stats

Debbie Abrahams MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, commenting on the ONS Labour Market Statistics today, said:

“Whilst we welcome the overall increase in employment, the fact that real wages are falling and millions are trapped in low paid, insecure work while the cost of basic essentials soars, proves the Tories are presiding over a crisis in living standards.

“These figures mask both regional inequalities and the employment gap faced by women, disabled people and BAME groups, who have too often borne the brunt of austerity cuts.

“Eight million people in working households live in poverty, with the number of children in poverty set to soar to a record 5.2 million over the next five years.

“Only a Labour government will ensure people’s living standards are protected with a real Living Wage of £10 per hour, an end to the public sector pay cap and urgent reforms to the government’s chaotic and failing Universal Credit programme.”
