Debbie Abrahams responds to Demos report

Debbie Abrahams, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Work & Pensions, responding to the Demos report on more than a million benefits sanctions imposed on disabled people since 2010 said:

“Disabled people are already facing the brunt of Conservative cuts with over four million living in poverty. Now this report provides further evidence that this Government is hurting the very people it should be supporting.

“Many charities have joined Labour in raising concerns that the current system is simply not working and leading to disabled people being treated unfairly. As the report states, a culture of disbelief is leading to sanctions on claimants who genuinely could not do the job they are being bullied into applying for. This is unacceptable.

“As described in Labour’s manifesto, we will scrap the Conservatives’ punitive sanctions regime and change the culture of our social security system, providing support to disabled people and addressing the barriers that prevent real choices and opportunities to live independently.”
