This decision to consult the public on the UK’s interrogation policy is long overdue – Chakrabarti
Shami Chakrabarti, Labour’s Shadow Attorney General, responding to the announcement of a public consultation on the UK’s interrogation policy, said:
“This decision to consult the public on the UK’s interrogation policy is long overdue and only comes after sustained pressure from Labour and leading civil rights groups.
“Ongoing inadequacies of the ‘Consolidated Guidance’ were laid bare in the Intelligence and Security Committee’s recent reports. Government inaction has been irresponsible.
“Only through transparency and accountability, can we avoid repeating the problems of the past and ensure the reputation and morale of vital UK intelligence agencies are not compromised by abuses overseas.”
