Delayed smart meter rollout – Long Bailey responds

Rebecca Long Bailey MP, Labour’s Shadow Business and Energy Secretary, responding to the delayed smart meter rollout, said:

“The government’s botched delivery of the smart meter rollout has meant that one year out from the original deadline we’re left with nearly 40 million more smart meters needing to be installed. What should have been an uncontroversial technology rollout has been mired in costly delays by Tory incompetence and blind faith in the market.

“Tackling the climate emergency and energy poverty will require a huge amount of work across the country on home insulation, low carbon heating and small scale renewable generation. With the Tories failing so dramatically to deliver what was supposed to be their flagship energy project, it’s clear that they can’t be trusted with this.”
