Diane Abbott response to ONS Migration Statistics
Diane Abbott MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, responding to today’s ONS Migration Statistics, said:
“This data shows the futility of the Tories’ net migration target, which has never once been met. They haven’t even come close.
“That’s because the Tories’ starting-point is how to pander to anti-immigrant parties. But their devotion to the ‘hostile environment’ policy and the Windrush scandal shows they have become an anti-immigrant party themselves.
“Labour in government will replace damaging and unworkable numerical targets with a policy that welcomes all the people we will need to build our economy, stronger public services, and a better society.
“As Theresa May goes, she should take these rotten policies with her. But there is no indication her likely successor will be any better, and the only way to ensure that is a Labour government with an immediate general election.”
