Emily Thornberry responds to the passing of Richard Trumka

Emily Thornberry MP, Labour’s Shadow International Trade Secretary, responding to the passing of Richard Trumka, President of the AFL/CIO, said:

“Richard Trumka was a great fighter for social justice at home and abroad and a great friend to our own trade unions, and his passing is a deeply sad moment both for the labour movement in America and for working people around the world.

“It is a tribute to the worker-centred policies and values he fought for all his life that they are now being championed so passionately by the President of the United States, but it is a tragedy that Richard Trumka has been lost to that fight at this crucial time.

“All of us who believe in standing up for the rights of working people wherever they live, as the best way to raise standards and wages all over the world, must now take inspiration from Richard Trumka, and continue to fight for those goals for the rest of our lives as fiercely as he did all of his.”
