Government admits it under-funded support for unaccompanied asylum seeking children
Andrew Gywnne MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, commenting on today’s Government funding announcement for local authorities looking after unaccompanied asylum seeking children, said:
“This is effectively an admission from the Government that it has massively under-funded support for some of the most vulnerable children that our councils care for.
“It has been over a year since the Local Government Association warned the Home Office that it was short-changing councils on funding for unaccompanied asylum seeking children, so ministers need to explain why they have dragged their feet for so long.
“This announcement does nothing to address the issue that a handful of councils are left struggling to provide support and care for large numbers of children due the failure of the Government’s National Transfer Scheme.”
