Government dithering on late payments is hitting our small businesses – Rebecca Long-Bailey

Rebecca Long-Bailey MP, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, commenting on the findings from the FSB that nine out of ten public sector suppliers have experienced late payments, said:

“The government is failing to take action on the scandal of late payments, even where it can have direct influence. Continued government dithering on late payments is hitting our small businesses the hardest, especially in the aftermath of Carillion’s crisis where late payment abuse resulted in thousands of sub-contractors with outstanding bills that may never be paid.

“Labour will take tough action on late payment to help sub-contractors. We will use government procurement practices to ensure that anyone bidding for a government contract pays its own suppliers within 30 days. And we will develop a version of the Australian system of binding arbitration and fines for persistent late-payers in both the public and private sector.”
