Government has failed carers – Margaret Greenwood

Margaret Greenwood MP, Labour’s Shadow Work and Pensions Secretary, responding to Department for Work and Pensions’ new statistics on Carers’ Allowance overpayments today, said:

“The Government has failed carers and these figures prove it.

“Something has gone badly wrong when over 50,000 carers are having to repay overpayments that were in made in error, sometimes for thousands of pounds. The DWP’s failure to communicate the eligibility criteria for carers alongside inadequate staffing levels has caused this mess.

“There are thousands of more cases outstanding where carers have reported a change that could have led to overpayments. There are real doubts about whether the DWP can process them quickly enough to prevent overpayments from building up further.

“People who often give up so much to care for a loved one should not be forced into financial hardship and or suffer the stress that overpayment demands can cause. Carers deserve better.”
