The Government must hold BMW to account – Andy McDonald
Andy McDonald MP, Labour’s Shadow Transport Secretary, commenting on BMW recalling 300,000 cars due to serious safety concerns, said:
“BMW’s conduct is deeply concerning. The company was aware of the potential for their vehicles to endanger the public for some time but delayed withdrawing them from our roads.
“It shouldn’t take a BBC investigation to provoke action to keep our roads safe. BMW has serious questions to answer. But the Government must also explain why it did not act sooner, what action it will take to hold BMW to account, and review the powers available to the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency.
“This is yet another example of the UK’s product safety regime simply not being fit for purpose and it cannot be right that such important decisions on public safety are left to the manufacturers. It’s time the Government steps up.”
