Government’s pilot voter ID is inadequate and could disenfranchise legitimate voters – Cat Smith
Cat Smith MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Voter Engagement and Youth Affairs, responding to the Government’s response to an Urgent Question on the Government’s plans to pilot voter ID, said:
“The response from the Government regarding their plans to pilot voter ID is clearly inadequate.
“The Equality and Human Rights Commission and over 40 charities and academics have warned that voter ID will have a disproportionate impact on groups including ethnic minority communities, older people, trans people, and people with disabilities.
“We cannot allow this Government to pilot discriminatory measures that could disenfranchise legitimate voters who already face multiple barriers to democratic engagement.
“Labour urges the Government to abandon their plans for voter ID as a matter of urgency.”
