Half of SMI claimants have now declined the loan – Margaret Greenwood
Margaret Greenwood MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, commenting on the latest figures on Support for Mortgage Interest claims published this morning, said:
“This is a significant policy failure by the government. Almost half of SMI claimants have now declined the loan.
“The Secretary of State doesn’t seem to understand how SMI works and over two months after the policy was introduced Serco still hasn’t managed to contact a quarter of claimants by phone.
“A high percentage of people receiving SMI are elderly or disabled, and it is a real concern how they will now manage without support from SMI.
“Labour strongly opposed the introduction of a loan. The government must now take urgent action to ensure that people are not pushed into poverty or homelessness as a result of its mistakes.”
