High Court rules that Northern Ireland’s abortion law breaches the UK’s human rights commitments – Shami Chakrabarti responds

Shami Chakrabarti, Labour’s Shadow Attorney General, commenting on the High Court ruling that Northern Ireland’s abortion law breaches the UK’s human rights commitments, said:

“This is very good news for the women of Northern Ireland, but Sarah Ewart should never have had to go through this exhausting and protracted process to vindicate her rights.

“We pay tribute today to Sarah, and to all the women who have campaigned for years for a woman’s right to have control over her own body.

“It is shameful that the government refuses to bring forward legislation on marriage equality and abortion reform because they are propped up by the DUP.

“While Boris Johnson concentrates on dodgy political deals that sacrifice women’s rights, Labour will always champion the rights of women and girls.”
