Ian Lavery responds to intimidation of MPs outside Parliament
Ian Lavery MP, Labour Party Chair, responding to intimidation of MPs outside Parliament, said:
“The ugly images we all saw yesterday are simply the latest attempt to silence political debate and have no place in our country. They were incarnations of a campaign of hatred that has been brought from the darkest reaches of the internet to the doors of our democracy.
“Action urgently needs to be taken so that public figures and politicians can continue to represent the wide spectrum of views expressed by constituents across the country. Brexit has been one of the most divisive issues of our lifetime, but the attempts to shout down and intimidate voices on either side of the debate who do not share a particular narrow view is simply unacceptable.
“Only a matter of years ago Jo Cox, an MP who devoted her short time in Parliament to bringing people together, was murdered in a politically motivated attack by a member of the far right. We all have a duty, whether locally or nationally, to ensure that our politics remains open and that we are all free to express our opinions without fear of harassment or worse.”
