I’m delighted by appointment of Maria Balshaw as first female director of the Tate – Tom Watson

Tom
Watson, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport,
commenting on the
official appointment of Maria Balshaw to be the new director of the Tate, said:

“I’m
delighted that the Prime Minister has confirmed the appointment of Maria
Balshaw as the new and first female director of the Tate.

“I
visited the Whitworth Gallery just before Christmas and saw first-hand Maria’s
vision and the work she’s done to open up the gallery to everyone in
Manchester, regardless of their background. I know she’ll do the same at the
Tate.

“Maria
is a fantastic appointment and I look forward to working with her in the role.”
