Imperative the Government acts now over Grenfell – Tony Lloyd

Tony Lloyd MP, Shadow Housing Minister, responding to a statement from the Metropolitan Police on the testing of a flat door from Grenfell Tower, said:

“It is alarming that a front door from a flat at Grenfell Tower burned in half the time it should have done. This news will cause residents of high-rise buildings further worry.

“Nine months on from the fire at Grenfell Tower, the Government must act to reassure residents and to keep them safe. Ministers say public safety is paramount, yet the Government has not provided funding for any of the 41 local authorities who have contacted them for help. Only seven of over 300 tower blocks identified with dangerous cladding have had it removed.

“The Government’s response to the Grenfell tragedy has been slow and wanting at every turn. It is imperative that the Government now acts urgently to complete testing and takes the necessary measures to keep people safe.”
