Imran Hussain responds to report into HMYOI Werrington

Imran Hussain MP, Labour’s Shadow Justice Minister, responding to the HM Inspectorate of Prisons inspection report into HMYOI Werrington, said:

“This is yet another deeply worrying report that highlights a marked deterioration in outcomes and raises serious fears about the youth custodial estate and its ability to keep vulnerable young people safe.

“Despite the role of experienced officers in maintaining safety, four in ten officers at HMYOI Werrington have served less than a year, and the government must shoulder the blame for their cuts creating significant staff turnover and allowing violence to run rampant.

“With over half of the young people at HMYOI Werrington from a BAME background and BAME young people so disproportionately represented in the wider criminal justice system, the report further presents a damning indictment of the government’s failure to implement the recommendations of the landmark Lammy Review.”
