Instead of offering a helping hand to struggling universities, Ministers are preparing to push them over the edge – Rayner
Angela Rayner MP, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, responding to comments from Universities Minister Chris Skidmore MP that his Department would not act to prevent universities from going bust, said:
“We are used to complacency from this Government but this is even worse. Instead of offering a helping hand to struggling universities, Ministers are preparing to push them over the edge. Only the Tories could claim the failure of a major higher education provider is a success for ‘strong competition’.
“They need to get real about the consequences of a university going bust. It would not only be a disaster for thousands of students and staff but a devastating blow for entire towns and cities. Even the limited protection they have promised to students is nowhere near to being fully implemented by their own admission.
“A Labour government would end the Tories’ failed free market experiment in higher education, scrapping tuition fees for students and providing education as a public service for the public good.”
