Jonathan Ashworth response to reports that a NHS nurse has been denied a marathon record because she wore trousers
Jonathan Ashworth MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, responding to reports that an NHS nurse was told her marathon world record attempt would only count if she completed it wearing a skirt, said:
“As a fellow London marathon runner, I’m shocked that Guinness World Records is refusing to recognise Jessica Anderson’s record simply because her scrubs don’t conform to their outdated and frankly sexist idea of what a nurse’s uniform is.
“To argue that a nurse must be in a skirt in this day and age simply beggars belief.
“I welcome that this is being reviewed following the outcry from nurses. I hope that they promptly right this wrong and alter their rules to recognise that nurses everyday perform exceptional care wearing their modern uniforms – often scrubs or tunics and trousers.”
