Lisa Nandy responds to reports that the Foreign Secretary was warned that Kabul would fall quickly

Lisa Nandy MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary, responding to reports that the Foreign Secretary was warned that Kabul would fall quickly, said:

“These staggering revelations completely contradict the Deputy Prime Minister’s account of events this summer. Despite repeatedly claiming to have been “caught by surprise” by the Taliban advance in Afghanistan, it is now clear that Dominic Raab was repeatedly warned about the imminent danger of collapse by one of his own most experienced diplomats.

“This raises serious questions. Why did nobody in Government act on these warnings? Why were the Foreign Secretary, Permanent Secretary and Prime Minister all on holiday as the situation rapidly deteriorated before their eyes? Why have the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister continue to claim to Parliament that they were not warned about the speed of the Taliban advance?

“These cables lay bare the extent of the staggering negligence at the top of Government. It put British service personnel in harm’s way and abandoned thousands of British and Afghan nationals to the Taliban. The new Foreign Secretary must come to the House immediately to explain how such an appalling lapse was able to take place.”
