Liz McInnes responds to latest events in Sudan
Liz McInnes MP, Labour’s Shadow Foreign Minister, responding to recent events in Sudan, said:
“The Sudanese security forces’ use of extreme violence against protesters in Khartoum is appalling. The violent crackdown has lasted more than a week, halted the necessary political transition and must be brought to an immediate end.
“The transition from Omar al-Bashir’s authoritarian rule to a more democratic and just future, won by the Sudanese people, is in real jeopardy. To avoid further bloodshed and even the risk of civil war, the Transitional Military Council must resume talks with the protesters, release all political prisoners and resume the transition. The Council should also begin an outside-led investigation into the killings and reinstate access to the internet and other forms of telecommunication.
“The African Union has taken a lead, rightly suspending the country’s membership until authorities put a civilian administration in place, but further pressure needs to be placed on the Transitional Military Council to end the violence against protesters and continue the transition.”
