Marine protection around Ascension Island must be properly funded
Luke Pollard MP, Labour’s Shadow Fisheries, Flooding and Water Minister, reacting to news that the government will designate a further 445,000 square kilometres of ocean around Ascension Island as a Marine protected area, said:
“We have been pushing for the government to back these ambitious plans for months. This new designation must now be properly funded so that these seas and the marine life in them will be genuinely protected. The government must not just create another paper park.
“We were all shocked when Blue Planet II showed the amount of plastic and pollution in our oceans. The next Labour government will roll out National Marine Parks around the UK and push for a new global oceans treaty.”
