Marsha de Cordova comments on reports that the Minister for Women and Equalities will not be attending the Crime and Justice Taskforce this evening to discuss VAWG
Marsha de Cordova MP, Labour’s Shadow Women and Equalities Secretary, commenting on reports that the Minister for Women and Equalities will not be attending the Government’s Crime and Justice Taskforce this evening to discuss violence against women and girls, said:
“It shows how the Conservatives view violence against women that their Minister for Women and Equalities is not involved in such an important meeting.
“The criminal justice system is failing victims and survivors of violence against women. We need action to address devastatingly low conviction rates of domestic and sexual violence and laws to stop sexual harassment. Instead, we have a 296 page crime Bill which doesn’t mention women once and proposes bigger punishment for damaging a memorial than rape.
“Minister for Women and Equalities should not be not a part-time job. Gender equality is not a ‘nice to have.’ It is time this Government takes violence against women seriously.”
