Matt Hancock’s Trinity Mirror intervention conveniently ignores the elephant in the room – Watson

Tom Watson MP, Labour’s Shadow Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, commenting on Matt Hancock’s decision to intervene in Trinity Mirror’s purchase of Richard Desmond’s newspapers, said:

“Maintaining free expression and plurality of views in our media is a vital part of our democracy.

“However in serving this Public Interest Intervention Notice to Trinity Mirror and Northern and Shell Group – Matt Hancock has conveniently ignored the elephant in the room.

“Daily and Sunday titles owned by Murdoch’s News UK, such as the Sun and The Times, continue to have a larger share of the market in circulation than The Mirror and The Express, even after the merger.

“If Matt Hancock is serious about ensuring plurality in media ownership, then he needs to review media ownership laws across the whole sector.”
