May’s playing catch-up with her poorly-targeted rehash of Labour policy

John McDonnell MP, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, commenting on Theresa May’s announcement that foreign buyers of properties in the UK may have to pay a new levy on property, said:

“The Tories are desperately trying to play catch-up with a poorly-targeted rehash of a proposal Labour made in the 2017 Manifesto. Unlike the Tories’ proposal this weekend, Labour’s fully-costed Offshore Company Property Levy targeted the tax avoiders and those seeking to speculate on UK property markets.

“Tinkering around the edges isn’t good enough. If the Government really want to fix the housing crisis they should back Labour’s plan to invest to build a million new genuinely affordable homes, give renters new rights, and match our pledge to end rough sleeping within a Parliament.”
