Mordaunt’s speech contained no serious vision for tackling global poverty

Kate Osamor MP, Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for International Development, responding to Penny Mordaunt’s speech and presentation at today’s Conservative Party Conference, said:

“This speech contained no serious vision for tackling global poverty. The Tories’ insistence on using UK aid to help British businesses expand their overseas markets, instead of spending it on poverty reduction, means they will only continue to entrench global poverty and inequality.

“By contrast, Labour recognises that poverty is political. We have a bold vision for radically transforming the country’s aid programme to tackle the root-causes of both poverty and inequality.

“The Tories will only ever be able to tinker with symptoms of poverty, rather than eradicate it entirely. This is an insult to UK taxpayers who are committed to the country’s continued aid spending. That’s because, like us, they want to see an end to global poverty once and for all.”
