MPs and Reprieve take government to court over refusal to hold torture inquiry – Shami Chakrabarti responds

Shami Chakrabarti, Labour’s Shadow Attorney General, commenting on legal action launched today against the government’s refusal to hold a judge-led inquiry over UK involvement in rendition and torture, said:

“It is a disgrace that the government is refusing to allow a fully independent inquiry into one of the darkest episodes in modern British history.

“Once again, the courts are being asked to step in because the Conservatives are trying to block scrutiny and accountability. In this case over grave abuses of human rights.

“No one is above the law, and torture victims and the public deserve to know the full truth.”
