Nandy accuses Tories of “gross negligence” over Russia threat and questions donations to Foreign Minister from former arms dealer with links to Kremlin

Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary Lisa Nandy MP will today (Tuesday 20 April) demand an explanation for the Tories’ “gross negligence” in failing to deal with the threat posed by Russia.

Nandy will challenge the Foreign Secretary to account for his government’s failure to fully implement any of the Russia Report’s 23 recommendations – 18 months after the report was completed and more than three years since the chemical weapons attack in Salisbury.

The Shadow Foreign Secretary will ask whether the Government’s laissez faire approach to “the most acute threat to our security” has anything to do with donations from Russian sources, including former arms dealer Alexander Temerko. Nandy will highlight that Minister for Asia, Nigel Adams MP, has received more than £33,000 from Temerko since 2016.

Nandy will highlight that the Tories have received more than £4.7m from Russian sources since David Cameron became Conservative Party leader in 2005.

Labour’s Shadow Foreign Secretary Lisa Nandy MP, said:

“No action on golden visas. No powers to sanction corrupt officials. Up to half of all money laundered out of Russia is still done through the UK. And three years after the Salisbury attack the Government have failed to fully implement any of the recommendations set out in the Russia report.

“Meanwhile the Conservative Party has continued to take funds from the oligarchs and kleptocrats who profited directly from the Putin regime. Since David Cameron became leader, they’ve taken almost £5m in Russian linked donations.”
