Nick Thomas-Symonds responds to government announcement of harsher sentences for migrants
Nick Thomas-Symonds MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, responding to the government’s announcement of harsher sentences for migrants, said:
“The Home Secretary talks about a broken asylum system. The Conservatives have been in power for 11 years, the responsibility lies with them.
“On their watch the time taken to process claims has rocketed and desperate people are still falling victim to criminal gangs. These measures briefed out, will not deal with that; they will reduce support for victims of human trafficking, potentially break international law, and there are still no effective, meaningful proposals to deal with the increasing number of people risking their lives crossing the Channel.”
