No one more ill-suited to this role – Rebecca Long Bailey responds to the creation of a climate change cabinet committee chaired by the Prime Minister

Rebecca Long Bailey MP, responding to the creation of a climate change cabinet committee chaired by the Prime Minister, said:

“There is possibly no one more ill-suited to this role than a Prime Minister with a history of climate denial, from a Tory government that has dismantled the UK’s solar and onshore wind industries, overseen a collapse in household energy savings measures and stalled the UK’s progress cutting emissions. In power Labour will kick start a Green Industrial Revolution, tackling the climate crisis and transforming lives. We are the only party with credible and detailed plans to do so.”

Notes to editors

Labour has been calling for cross-departmental coordination on the climate and environment emergency for years. Labour has stressed the importance of any cross departmental committee focuses on species decline as well as climate change adaptation and that fully costed, cross departmental plans are brought back to the House of Commons as outlined in the climate and environment emergency declaration back in May. Labour has also demanded that this new committee is transparent in the frequency and outcomes of its meetings.
