We pay tribute to all those here in Westminster and in Northern Ireland who have campaigned – Tony Lloyd responds to Northern Ireland Bill amendments passing
Tony Lloyd MP, Labour’s Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary, responding to the passing of amendments to the Northern Ireland Bill on abortion and gay marriage, said:
“Labour would prefer Stormont to be up and running, so that decisions affecting people in Northern Ireland can be decided by locally accountable politicians. But in the Executive’s absence, Westminster is right to take action.
“With Stormont not sitting, the government has refused to deliver change. Labour secured reform on Marriage Equality, access to safe and legal abortion, compensation for survivors of historical institutional abuse and a pension for severely injured victims of the Troubles.
“We pay tribute to all those here in Westminster and in Northern Ireland who have campaigned over the years to get us to where we are today. Labour will always stand up for Northern Ireland and act in the best interests of all its citizens.”
