Peter Kyle responds to new statistics on attendance in education settings during the Covid outbreak

Peter Kyle MP, Labour’s Shadow Schools Minister, responding to new statistics on attendance in education settings during the Covid outbreak, said:

“The Conservatives’ negligence in letting the Delta variant take hold in the UK and failing to make schools Covid-secure, has led to almost a quarter of a million pupils missing out on school last week. That’s on top of an average loss of 115 days face-to-face teaching since the start of the pandemic.

“Just as their public health measures have been insufficient, the Government’s meagre recovery package doesn’t go anywhere near far enough. They have failed to keep children learning in school and are now failing to support their recovery.

“Labour has a comprehensive plan, combining learning and wellbeing to help every child to bounce back and release their potential – it’s time for the Government to match Labour’s ambition for our kids.”
