This policy was yet another example of Theresa May’s heartless ‘hostile environment’ – Ashworth

Jonathan Ashworth MP, Labour’s Shadow Health Secretary, responding to the news that the NHS will no longer be forced to share immigrants’ data with the Home Office, said:

“This policy was yet another example of Theresa May’s heartless ‘hostile environment’ which is clearly undermining patient care. This U-turn is a victory for Labour MPs like Paul Williams and Luciana Berger, as well as the Health Select Committee.

“But the Government needs to go further. So far Theresa May has ignored warnings that the regulations on ID check at hospitals are also damaging patient care. The Government must now suspend these regulations while a full review is carried out.

“Today’s U-turn should only be the start. To protect the best interests of patients the Government must end Theresa May’s hostile environment entirely.”
