Real equality at the BBC is still clearly an aim rather than a reality – Tom Watson

Tom Watson MP, Labour’s Shadow Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary, commenting on the BBC’s remuneration disclosure, which has shown that the top 12 earners on the BBC’s latest list of star salaries are all men, said:

“Today’s release shows that real equality at the BBC is still clearly an aim rather than a reality.

“The BBC has made progress since last year however stubbornly large gaps remain – both in gender pay and in reporting, with many big names missing from the list.

“While the BBC’s data might be translucent rather than completely transparent, the corporation is miles ahead of the other major broadcasters.

“To ensure equality across the sector we need better reporting and comprehensive action plans by all. The next Labour government will go further on closing the gender and ethnicity pay gap, by requiring large employers to take action to close the gap, or face further auditing or fines.”
