Rebecca Long Bailey responds to ONS figures showing that consumers stayed away from some high street stores in July

Rebecca Long Bailey, Labour’s Shadow Business Secretary, responding to ONS figures showing that consumers stayed away from some high street stores in July, said:

“These disappointing figures show the abject failure of this Conservative Government to grow the economy.

“The findings are a reflection of the fact that in Tory Britain wage growth is slowing except for wealthy executives, while at the same time rail fares and other cost of living items for ordinary people are increasing. Only last month ONS analysis revealed that hard up families are spent £900 more than they earned in 2017.

“More than eight years of Conservative stewardship of the economy and a brutal austerity driven economic policy has failed business and workers alike and left our retail sector in crisis.

“The next Labour government will be one for the many, not the few and will reverse the disastrous Tory austerity agenda and give workers a decent pay increase.”
