Rebecca Long Bailey responds to research showing fracking has led to a dramatic increase in methane emissions

Rebecca Long Bailey MP, Labour’s Shadow Business, Environment and Industrial Strategy Secretary, responding to new research show fracking has led to a dramatic increase in methane emissions, said:

“This study underscores what we have known for a while – that fracking is not a ‘bridge’ to a cleaner future, but a pathway to planetary disaster.

“There is no way we can reach net zero by 2050 if we fully exploit the UK’s shale gas reserve, as analysis by Labour has shown that this would release as much in greenhouse gas emissions as our entire carbon budget. Simply put, there is no room left for fracking and it should be banned immediately.”
