Richard Burgon responds to Grenfell petition

Shadow Secretary of State for Justice Richard Burgon MP, responding to the news that the petition calling for a broad-based Grenfell Inquiry panel has reached 100,000 signatures and so will be debated in parliament, said:

“This parliamentary debate needs to be an important milestone on the road to securing justice for those affected by the Grenfell fire. For the Grenfell Inquiry to deliver truth and justice, Grenfell survivors and their bereaved families must have full confidence in it.

“To tackle the obvious current lack of trust, Theresa May should respond positively to this strong show of public support and use her powers under the Inquiries Act to deliver a broad-based Inquiry panel.

“The Stephen Lawrence Inquiry, which marked a watershed in uncovering institutional racism, had a similar type of panel to the one now demanded by Grenfell survivors and their bereaved families. There is no reason for the Conservative government to continue denying this request for a broad Inquiry panel”
