Stephen Doughty responds to violence against protestors in Lekki

Stephen Doughty MP, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Africa, responding to the violence against protestors in Lekki, said:

“We are horrified by the killing and injuring of protestors – including many young people – in Lagos overnight. Reports of extreme violence being used against crowds at the Lekki toll plaza demand urgent and transparent investigation, as do the allegations of extortion, sexual violence, torture and killings being committed by the SARS police unit.

“The Labour Party stands in solidarity with all Nigerians who are peacefully demonstrating for police reform, the adherence to human rights and the defence of the rule of law. The UK must now use its position on the UN Security Council and UN Human Rights Council to support calls for a full and independent investigation into the tragic events at Lekki toll plaza, ensuring the victims receive justice and responsible for these atrocities are held to account.”
